August 6th, 2015: Sky Harvest becomes Canada’s First Certified Organic Urban Farm
With its goal to become the world’s most sustainable city, Vancouver businesses are often leaders in sustainability. The city’s most recent success story involves a small farm called Sky Harvest, which has just become Canada’s first and only certified organic urban farm.
Located in the heart of East Vancouver, Sky Harvest was recently granted organic certification for its small-scale production of microgreens, the popular and tiny fine-dining green. Typically used for garnish and as points of interest, microgreens are packed with more nutrients than their full-grown counterparts and range from the delicate and mild, to the spicy and flavourful.
Sky Harvest has always grown organically but, most recently, set itself apart from competitors by gaining organic certification without realizing what a milestone it would be – Canada’s first certified organic urban farm. Now a leader in the agricultural community, founder Aaron Quesnel hopes that the Sky Harvest story will inspire other farms to follow suit and help drive popularity of local organic food across Canada.
